Lesson 2: Fight or Flee

"In this exercise we will learn how to make a fist and reveal the secrets that it holds"

LESSON TWO

When someone is about to do battle the first thing that happens is they make a fist. Instinctually they will start to clench and unclench their hand. This is the body’s way of preparing for an upcoming conflict. This simple action begins a process that will cause the other muscles and the endocrine system to respond. As adrenaline begins to flow in the body, your heart rate increases, respiration becomes faster and deeper and your body prepares for a fight.

In this exercise we will learn how to make a fist and reveal the secrets that it holds. Begin by relaxing your arms down at your sides. Now bending at the elbow bring your forearms up, palms facing up and hands open. Curl your fingers into the palm of your hands and fold the thumb over them on the outside of the fist. Tighten the fist for the count of ten then relax. Uncurl the fingers bask to the original position and hold it open for and additional count of ten. Repeat the process five times. This exercise will begin the process the body uses to fight.

Making a fist is accompanied by a mental exercise that is our starting point in becoming a warrior. At the beginning of every conflict you must decide to fight or flee? If you see yourself as a victim the answer will be to flee, but if you see yourself as a warrior the answer will be to fight. Because we are in a controlled environment and there is no real danger, we can make a decision that is free from emotion. We are free to make a collected and unbiased choice one way or the other. With that freedom I want you to make a conscious decision now to fight, to begin doing battle against your disease.

This is a crucial time in your training. This is where you will actually determine to adopt a life changing mental attitude. You will shake off the fear, and unburden yourself from the idea of being a victim. You will fight with your body as well as your mind, and dedicate yourself to becoming a warrior. As a warrior, fighting your illness is the only course of action that you can make.

These first two exercises are ones that should be done at the beginning of every training session. If you do not do anything else, do these two exercises.
