"Walking tall."

LESSON SIX

Whenever I teach a self defense class, the first exercise I have the participants do is to walk individually from one end of the training area to the other. This simple exercise gives me a chance to evaluate each participant. As they walk toward me I am looking for three things. First, I watch how they walk. Is there a confidence in their steps. Are their strides long and with a purpose? The next thing I look at is their body. Are they relaxed. Do their arms swing freely at their sides. Is there posture erect. The third area is their head. If they hold their head up their eyes focused ahead on their destination. If I can recognize these attributes as they walk toward me then I know that they have faith in themselves. They are easier to train because they don’t doubt themselves. They concentrate on what they are doing right rather than fixating on their mistakes.
